In a typical job search, without direct access to the Hiring Manager, you submit your resume through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) – a computer program that searches for keywords in your resume to match it with the available position.

Your resume takes a long journey, along with thousands of others, before it even has the possibility of a chance to be presented to the Hiring Manager. Since you were a Target Hunter (in Step 4), you now have a customized list of specific Hiring Managers. Bingo! Avoid the ATS.

Reach out to them directly to ensure you get seen – the right way.

Step 7

Ace the Interview – Get It Right, First Time

  • Present your image in alignment with the company’s values – and take it up a notch
  • Remember you are a product that can perform a function to solve their problem
  • Know your value and communicate it clearly and specifically
  • Use the STAR formula to communicate accomplishments and challenges
  • Align your purpose with their purpose – use your insights from The Career Physical
  • Ask the right questions

Once you get your foot in the door, all that’s left to do is Ace the Interview! So that may feel daunting, you may get stage fright, or you may simply not know how to put your best foot forward.

  • Optimizing an Imperfect Offer: Understand what it will take to move up in time, earn a higher salary, and increase responsibilities over time. Take the job now and then grow it into your dream job.
  • Focus on Career Advancement: Now that you have the job, don’t get comfortable. Use the opportunity as a stepping stone in your path of tactical career advancement.
